(28 Mar 1979) RR7913B UK FARMING - CATTLE IN THE CAN
Until now the export of breeding heifers has been far
too costly for the average farmer. Britain has just
launched a new way of exporting cattle: a revolutionary
technique of freezing cattle embryo. A plane load of
breeding heifers would once have cost 168,000
dollars to send to New Zealand. With the new
technique, sufficient embryos to produce the same
number of cattle, can be sent for 500 dollars. In March
1979 the world's first commercial export of frozen
cattle embryo was sent from Britain to New Zealand.
This report takes a look at the technique of collecting,
implanting and handling live cattle embryos.
