Beyond National Borders: Japan's Challenges to Resilience in the Face of Natural Disaster
[ Ссылка ]
From Hurricane Katrina to Hurricane Sandy, the United States has had its share of natural disasters, which have claimed the lives of thousands of people and caused unprecedented destruction. Japan is also all too familiar with natural disasters. Earthquakes and tsunamis have destroyed land, reversed economic growth, and taken lives across the country. Japan’s neighboring countries, such as South Korea and China, are also vulnerable to natural disasters and share the common issue of focusing on ways to become more resilient. Mr. Toshihiro Nikai, the Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party’s General Council, has been playing a major role in advancing disaster mitigation and saving precious lives while strengthening ties between Japan and its neighboring countries. In this program, Mr. Nikai discusses the importance of promoting disaster risk reduction in Japan. Mr. Nikai also touches upon Japan’s disaster diplomacy agenda, and its involvement in disaster relief and reduction efforts in the Asia-Pacific region.
Speaker:
The Honorable Toshihiro Nikai, Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party’s General Council; Former Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry; Former Minister of Transportation; Member of the House of Representatives
