It is late season up here. Lots of farmers are taking care of spring tillage chores this year. Fuel is still semi cheap after the election. And it is pre tax season so every deduction and expense is welcomed. This field will be planted in field corn next year. Anhydrous Ammonia and granular fertilzer has already been applied. This discing will chop up the stubble and mix it with dirt so that the cultivator in the spring wont have a plugging issue. Recreational Tillage is a phrase I am hearing more and more of - this autumn / winter. This a Mid 60s era John Deere 4020 that is generally used for utility chores around the farm. Auger Duty and pulling a planter in the spring until I get done with the other tractor on the cultivator. The other much larger tractor has an air conditioned, noise reduction insulated operator cabin. It is located 150 miles south of here. It would take 8 hours to road it up, 8 hours to road it back down, JUST to use it for roughly 12 hours of work. To put it on a truck trailer twice would be close to a thousand dollars. Over Dimensional loads cost 2 bucks a mile at least and you pay them empty miles also. I can sit in the seat hold the steering wheel and pull the disc slower while wearing heavier clothing for much less expense than that. The only drawback was that having my face chilled at 30 degrees for 10 hours really put the zap on me when I did warm up and shower. Instant sleepy.
