🔷Festa Major de Sants🔷
The Fiestas de Sants or Fiesta Mayor de Sants (in Catalan, Festa Major de Sants) is celebrated in the Sants neighborhood (Barcelona) on Saint Bartholomew's day (August 24). Its most distinctive element is the ornamentation of the streets, but there are also concerts, popular dances, castelleras exhibitions, giants and big heads, correfocs of devils and fire dragons and other festive events.
Santa María de Sants was an old municipality in the plain of Barcelona, annexed to Barcelona in 1897. The first signs of the celebration of the main festival on Saint Bartholomew's Day come from the 19th century: in 1852 the La Paz society installed a tent at the Hostal Nou. According to the writer Antoni Careta, in the middle of the century popular dances such as the ball d'en Serrallonga or Sant Bartomeu were celebrated, with Roman soldiers, angels and demons. At the end of the century, the Floral Games were also common, documented for the first time in 1897.
One of the main hallmarks is the decoration of streets, an element that it shares with the Fiestas de Gracia. In 1943 the first street contest was held. In 1958 the Federation of Associations and Commissions of Streets of the Greater Festival of Sants was constituted.
However, in the 1960s this tradition fell into decline and, between 1970 and 1984, street decoration was abandoned. In 1985 the tradition was resumed and, since then, the party has been gaining in popularity. Along with the ornamentation of the streets, they usually celebrate community meals and snacks, concerts and shows, castles performances, floral offerings to Saint Bartholomew and, since 1983, a cycling race.
