BMW isn’t new to EVs, in fact their i3 has been on the scene since 2014. However, what we’re talking about here isn’t even in the same universe. The BMW iX is the company’s first dedicated, ground up, EV and today I get a chance to show you all thanks to the generosity of my friends over at International BMW
Welcome to the first look of what BW believes will be their electric future, the iX.
This isn’t some slap-dash catchup play to offer an EV as quickly as possible, no
This iX is sorted out, special feeling, and genuinely fun!
The hot topics you’re all wondering about are things like power and range. This is the xDrive 50 trim which means it gets electric motors on the front and the rear, giving it AWD. Combined power output from those motors amounts to a whopping 516hp and 564 lbft. And all of that is fed from the 105Kw battery pack underneath and whether you go for the 21 or 22 inch wheels you still get over 300 miles of range
And to say it’s quick is an understatement…0-60 is over in under 4 and a hlaf seconds…in something that weighs over 5500 lbs!
And not only that, but the sounds you get to accompany the power are so cool!
That sounds like a lot of weight, and it is, but it could be way worse. BMW uses aluminum through the car to drop the weight, and the body is made largely of carbon fiber reinforced plastic
So those things together save hundreds of pounds, but they also serve another important purpose for a BMW…make the chassis rigid
It’s easy to get singularly focused on te 0-60 and straightline speed in EVs, but if you’re just looking at that you’re missing the bigger picture
This iX has the batteries in the floor so weight is down low.
It uses air suspension to adjust ride height, but also to make micro-corrections hundreds of times a second to make sure the car is as sharp as it can be through any driving
The turn in is quick and nimble feeling..it lacks some feedback, but compared to other EVs in this class it’s really good!
We touched on the air suspension, and it’s very good for sharpening the car up, but BMW has also tuned the rebound to relax in comfort mode
And I know everyone calls their normal drive mode “comfort” but here in the iX it truly is!
The car is nice a soft over road imperfections, the steering is light and easy, the power delivery is smooth and doesn’t snap your neck, and it’s whisper quiet in here
And one of the unsung heroes of being behind the wheel is visibility. The more you have the more safe and relaxed you feel.
And it’s a fish bowl in here! The visibility is fantastic!
The cabin is where you really get a sense this is a next-gen kind of car
The massive dual screens dominate your experience and they’re running the new iDrive 8
Everything, including climate is now worked into the screen, but they do it in a smart way
Aside from climate, there’s a million ways to customize, you can even add widgets to your home screen for things you use all the time.
There’s a swipe down function with shortcuts so it’s very similar to something like checking notifications on your phone, it all just works really well.
Your 360 camera is amazing as it usually is, and you have the breadcrumbs feature
The other screen is for your gauge cluster and it’s the same story, gives you all the info you could possibly want and let’s you totally customize the look
Then there’s the HUD..and it’s huge..and it looks like something out of Captain Marvel
You’ve got wireless car play, android auto, and all the stuff you’ll use all the time
The diver assistance suite is VERY good, not quite Tesla level, but very good
The dash is low for visibility and the screens look like they’re floating there and since this a ground up EV you don’t have a transmission tunnel eating into your foot space
Speaking of space the use of space in here is really well thought out, aside from the cup holders
But you have this integrated phone holder with a hole to run a charger underneath, there’s a wireless charging pad underneath
There’s a MASSIVE pano roof that has the electro glaze thing from the McLaren GT
Such a cool feature
The door release is a push button thing, with a mechanical fail safe
But then there’s the rear and it’s so spacious
The seats are really plush and comfy, there’s no driveline taking up foot space
The big pano roof lets light in, it feels very relaxing
