Amami Oshima is an island in the Amami archipelago, southwest of Japan and belongs to Kagoshima Prefecture. The climate is a humid subtropical climate with very warm summers and mild winters. Precipitation is high throughout the year, but highest in the months of May, June and September. The area is subject to frequent typhoons. The island has world-class rich nature in the mountain area where divers and rare species inhabit. In addition, the island has the second largest mangrove forest in Japan as well as a number of endangered species. The ocean area, fostered by these rich forests, features beautiful coral reefs.
