Dr Maran discusses how obesity causes degeneration of the joints in this video. He says that one of the side effects of obesity is the wear and tear of the joints. He reminds that while walking, a normal person exerts pressure on his or her knee joints and for every additional kilo of weight the person will exert 4 kg more weight on the knee joints which is also one of the weight bearing joints along with hip joints and ankle joints. This reduces the gap between two bones of the joint causing degeneration of the joint. Dr Maran goes on to say that obese people are with more fat and the fat presence produces a low level inflammation. The inflammatory cells so produced affect the joints, knee joints in particular.
Dr Maran says that small joints in the hands which are not weight bearing joints can also get damaged due to these inflammatory cells. He goes on to say that most of the obese have other comorbid conditions. He goes on to tell that most of these comorbid conditions are because of these inflammatory cells. He adds that if someone who is obese have knee issues in one knee then they tend to put emphasize on the other knee which can also develop degeneration in due course.
