At the University of Massachusetts–Amherst (UMass), experimenter Agnès Lacreuse imprisons, torments, and kills marmosets—small monkeys native to South America who are known to be particularly susceptible to disease in captivity. She has received more than $4 million in taxpayer money to drill into marmosets’ skulls and implant electrodes into their brains. She manipulates their hormones by castrating the males and removing the uterus and ovaries from the females, and she claims to study menopause in marmosets, even though marmosets don’t experience this condition.
PETA is calling on UMass to end Lacreuse’s cruel and deadly experiments on vulnerable marmosets. Like us, these monkeys are sentient: They feel love, pain, loneliness, and anguish. They are sensitive and fiercely loyal to their families and friends. But significant biological differences—anatomical and physiological differences—mean that results from these small animals, who weigh less than a pound, won’t reliably translate into useful results for humans.
