Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat is said to have killed over 300 Chinese soldiers during the 1962 Indo-Chinese war:
Battle of Nuranang
In November 1962, Rawat and his fellow soldiers were outnumbered and outgunned in the Battle of Nuranang. Rawat and his comrades neutralized a Chinese medium machine gun (MMG) by throwing grenades at the bunker and capturing it. Rawat then held off the enemy for 72 hours with the MMG.
Casualties
The battle resulted in 300 Chinese casualties, while the 4th Garhwal Rifles lost two men and had eight wounded.
Rawat's death
Rawat was fatally hit by Chinese automatic fire while crawling back towards the Indian lines. Some accounts say he shot himself with his last round of ammunition, while others say he was taken prisoner and executed by the Chinese.
Awards
Rawat was posthumously awarded the Maha Vir Chakra, India's second highest gallantry award during wartime. His unit, the 4th Garhwal Rifles, was awarded the battle honor Nuranang
The love story of Jaswant Singh Rawat is about his relationship with Sela, a Monpa girl who fell in love with him against her father's wishes:
Love
Sela fell in love with Jaswant and would cross the post where he was deployed.
Support
During the Sino-Indian war, Sela and her sister Nura helped Jaswant by providing him with food and ammunition.
Betrayal
Sela's father informed the Chinese army that Jaswant was fighting alone, and the Chinese captured and beheaded Jaswant.
Tragedy
Sela committed suicide by jumping from a hillock, and Nura was killed by the Chinese army.
