We are often told that we must embrace that which makes us unique if we are to lead the best, most authentic, life possible. For Katie Chorbak, the truth looks rather different. Convinced that the pain she felt made her unlike anyone else, Chorbak began abusing alcohol and drugs, and eventually she nearly lost her life. But when she came to see disconnection and loss as something common to all human beings, she found the strength to persevere and, ultimately, to thrive. The journey Chorbak recounts is at times heartbreaking, but in its telling we learn that it is through service to others that we find our truest selves. Katie Chorbak is a Jacksonville native and Bishop Kenny graduate. Soon after graduation, Katie joined the United States Army. After serving for seven years as a chemical and biological weapons specialist, she was medically retired. Upon her return home, she faced many struggles readjusting to the world outside the military. It was during this time, while facing the greatest struggle of her life, that she committed herself to the service of others. Currently Katie is working on her General Contractor’s license and is in the process of starting her own business to fund her philanthropic work. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at [ Ссылка ]
