Weekly testers drop off their saliva samples in COVID-19 test kits at University City High School. This is motivated by the idea of weekly screening testing for COVID-19 at schools, a recommendation from last year by the CDC to limit transmission in schools.
“We need better data. We need more data to say - is that true? Do we really need to go this length of adding another layer of mitigation," said Jason Newland, MD, MEd, professor of pediatrics, infectious diseases at Washington University. Newland launched the Safe Return to School Study, starting with the 2021-2022 school year.
Newland is focused on five school districts in North St. Louis County that are heavily impacted by COVID-19. He's examining results of weekly screening testing for COVID-19 through 16 participating middle and high schools. Of the 16 schools, eight are selected for weekly screenings for asymptomatic infections.
