Claire Messud is is the author of six works of fiction including the New York Times bestsellers The Emperor’s Children and The Burning Girl. In her fiction, she has specialized in creating unusual female characters with ferocious, imaginative inner lives. Her new book, Kant’s Little Prussian Head and Other Reasons Why I Write, opens a window on Messud’s own life: a peripatetic upbringing; a warm, complicated family; and, throughout it all, her devotion to art and literature.
Novelist and essayist Maaza Mengiste is the author of the novels Beneath the Lion's Gaze, and more recently The Shadow King, which was just shortlisted for the 2020 Booker Prize. Her latest collection, Addis Ababa Noir, contains stories about the dark side of the capital city, written by some of Ethiopia's most talented writers living in the country and abroad.
