This lecture was originally hosted on April 9th, 2020 on Zoom. It is one of three live lectures a part of the “Space From Your Place” series hosted by the McMaster NEUDOSE satellite team.
Ever since we have been capable of looking up, we have seen patterns in the stars. Our ancestors told stories of the shapes they saw in the stars and passed them down through oral and written tradition. In the cycles of the stars they saw their gods and their heroes. Through their pursuit to understand the heavens they were able to better understand the seasons, timekeeping, agriculture and navigation. We will explore how humanity has used stars throughout our history and take a brief glimpse into how astronomy has shaped our culture and technology.
About Devin Burke:
I was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario before going to the University of Guelph to study nanoscience. Throughout my undergraduate degree I developed a strong affinity for physics and astronomy. I specialized in the physics of nanoscience and picked up a minor in physics as well before graduating and moving on to study experimental nuclear astrophysics at the master’s level at McMaster University. Now in my doctoral studies I have moved academically away from astronomy into more traditional experimental nuclear physics but I am still contributing to astronomical research and engineering through my detector designs and my contributions to the McMaster Interdisciplinary Satellite team.
