Hello!
Let’s imagine the following scenario: HR needs to schedule employees for training and does their best to bring everyone together. This includes training such as leadership, mindset or communication, which is part of the company’s overall training strategy.
The company pays for the training, but sometimes employees do not attend because their manager is short on skill or staff, and cannot afford to lose them for the duration of the training. Naturally, the employee follows their manager’s instructions but this is often not even communicated, leaving HR in the dark.
It can also happen that people get pulled out of the training because the department cannot function without them for a day. This is a slippery slope.
What would you do? Most of the time it comes down to a lack of leadership, communication and planning.
Here are my top tips:
1. Understand different perspectives: HR must communicate the importance of personal growth and professional development to achieve better overall results. Additionally, HR should understand the manager’s frustrations and deliverables to schedule the best possible time for training. Without management’s unwavering support, this will be an ongoing challenge.
2. Identify common goals: Find overlapping priorities between management and HR. It’s important to create a training plan that satisfies the needs of both parties.
3. Facilitate open dialogue and build rapport: Ensure that both parties can express their concerns and priorities. Encourage a collaborative approach to finding a solution.
4. Set clear expectations: What are HR’s expectations? What are management’s expectations? What are the aligned expectations? Define these clearly to avoid misunderstandings.
Dealing with conflicting priorities is undoubtedly a challenge. If a manager doesn’t fully recognize the importance of soft skills in the job, there is likely no buy-in.
Always remember, if you experience resistance, there is a lack of rapport.
These were my thoughts for today, and I will see you next week again.
Until then, be happy, be healthy and be at your best.
