This is one of the all time great grooves, performed by Rick Marotta (drums) and Chuck Rainey (bass). Legend has it that Jeff Porcaro loved the feel of this song so much that he looped it onto a cassette, and would drive around for hours listening. Actually, most all of the Steely Dan recordings are fantastic, filled with top notch musicians. (I wish I had gotten into them earlier....)
I wanted to post this because I seem to hear this drum part differently than a lot of drummers play it. None of us can come THAT close, but to me it's the subtleties that make this drum track so good... especially those upbeat 8th notes, followed by the much softer hi-hat barks on the last 16th notes of 2 and 3 (in most measures). These really help the song chug along in its own unique way.
