Medical abortion is where you take pills when in a safe period of time and it is legally allowed and when there are other risk factors required to terminate the pregnancy. Medical abortion is done within 7 weeks of the pregnancy. Usually you do need a scan for all the patients to confirm to confirm post. Pre during the abortion you require a scan to rule out any abnormal or ectopic pregnancies. But post pregnancy it is not always a must. If we do a scan we can confirm that everything is gone. If the bleeding is not there we may just wait and do a urine pregnancy test at the end of 3 weeks to check there is nothing of the pregnancy left behind because if beta HCG comes positive then we may have to do a scan. In case the bleeding persists or any other morbid conditions we have to always get a scan done to see if there is any retained products or any other problems that is there.
