In the early 20th century, young women were hired to paint watch dials with a luminous paint made from radium. They were told the paint was safe and were even encouraged to use their lips to shape the fine paintbrushes. But what they didn't know was that radium is highly radioactive and incredibly dangerous.
Over time, the women began to suffer from serious health issues like jaw necrosis, severe anemia, and bone fractures. It was only after some of the women died that the true dangers of radium exposure became known. The surviving Radium Girls fought back, suing the companies responsible, which led to significant changes in workplace safety laws.
