In mid-September 2020, a Mediterranean cyclone appeared in Greece for the first time. Large swaths of the country, from the southern Ionian to the Sporades and Crete, were faced with heavy winds, torrential rain, and flooding. Four people lost their lives. In Karditsa, Cyclone Ianos wiped out more than 13,000 livestock animals while also destroying homes and property. The region’s stock farmers lost their herds overnight, and with them financial security and hope for the future.
In the days after the disaster, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) launched an effort to help the affected farmers in collaboration with the nonprofit organization New Agriculture New Generation.
