Uterine stimulants (Oxytocics): These are the drugs that are used to induce contraction or greater tonicity of the uterus. Oxytocics are used both to induce labour and to reduce postpartum haemorrhage.
Oxytocin: It activates oxytocin receptors and increases uterine contractions. It also causes induction and augmentation of labour.
Others:
Mifepristone: It is a progestational and glucocorticoid hormone antagonist. It inhibits progesterone-induced bleeding during the luteal phase and in early pregnancy by releasing endogenous prostaglandins from the endometrium.
Ethacridine: It is also used as an agent for second-trimester abortion.
Prostaglandins (PGs):
Misoprostol (PG-E1): It is a cytoprotective prostaglandin used to treat peptic ulcers and in combination with mifepristone for terminating early pregnancies.
Dinoprostone (PG-E2): It is a synthetic analogue of PGE2. It is used to terminate the second trimester of pregnancy by promoting uterine contractions.
Carborprost (15-methyl PG-F2α): it is used to induce second-trimester abortions & to control postpartum haemorrhage. The 15-methyl group prolongs the duration of action.
Ergot Alkaloids:
Ergometrine: It is an ergot alkaloid that stimulates contractions of uterine and vascular smooth muscle.
