STORYLINE:
Thousands gathered in Indian-controlled Kashmir to observe a religious procession marking the Muslim month of Muharram and expressed their condemnation of the recent series of Quran-burning incidents in Sweden and Denmark.
Muharram marks the martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson Imam Hussein and his companions in the battle of Karbala in the seventh century in present-day Iraq.
Chants of unity and prayers for peace resonated through the streets in the main city of Srinagar as the mourners rejected the recent Quran burning and said such incidents caused immense hurt and anguish to Muslims worldwide.
"We, as Muslims living in the east, feel very sad that copies of the Holy Quran have been burned. The Quran is very dear to us," said Syed Muhammad Burhan, a participant in the procession.
The mourners were holding Quran and placards condemning the burning of the holy book.
They also chanted slogans such as "Death to America" and "Death to Israel.”
Muharram is among the holiest months for Shiite Muslims across the world and includes rituals which are marked by large processions of mourners beating their chests while reciting elegies and chanting slogans to denounce the slaughter of Prophet’s grandson and his 72 companions.
The mourning reaches its peak on Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram month in the Islamic lunar calendar. Wednesday’s procession marked the seventh day on the calendar.
