Good evening. What a sight it is to be here tonight. In mid-2021 at the age of 55, life was moving along quite nicely. Highlighted by 25 years of marriage to the lady I love and three wonderful grown children.
Then seemingly out of nowhere. I was diagnosed with inoperable and likely incurable pancreatic cancer. The odds were not in my favor and defying those odds would be difficult. It was like life hitting a brick wall at full speed.
However, fast forward to today and I stand here cancer-free. As I look back at the tough battle, I believe there were three things that helped me get through against difficult odds. I was mentally committed and prepared to defeat the worst of cancers with the highest mortality rate.
I refused to let pancreatic cancer cloud my mind with negativity, helplessness and feeling sorry for myself. I wrote continuously reminding myself of the many, many great things in my life. Beginning with my immediate family, I surrounded myself with positive attitudes.
I needed positive mental support from those around me including both those in personal life and those in my professional life. My wife Eileen and I made an intense effort to seek the best and most advanced, innovative treatment methods for pancreatic cancer in the world.
I wanted to participate in every clinical trial that would give us strength of hope. Everywhere we searched led us to Dr. Douglas B. Evans of Froedtert Hospital Medicine College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Most impressive was I was treated like a person in dire need and not like a patient number.
Each and every member of my cancer team treated me like my life mattered. Then a miracle occurred. MY PANCREATIC CANCER INEXPLICABLY BECAME OPERABLE. Dr. Evans performed my surgery 17 months ago. Today, I feel like the luckiest person in the world.
I thank Froedtert Hospital, Medical College of Wisconsin, the medical experts and the entire team that gave me the most advanced care I could ever expect. And primarily, thanks to Dr. Doug Evans who set the stage for renewed hope.
