LMS Jubilee class 4-6-0 no 45690 Leander working 1Z76 The North Wales Coast Express from Liverpool to Holyhead and back on Sun 21st July 2019.
Following the cancelation of the following Tuesday's "Welsh Mountaineer" trip from Preston to Blaenau Ffestiniog owing to multiple washouts in a storm I chose to replace that trip with today's run.
Unlike my previous outings on the NWCE with 46100 Royal Scot and before then the ill fated run with 45699 Galatea I would only be going as far as Llandudno Junction. From there I would travel down into Llandudno on a service train for the afternoon.
The standard route for the NWCE would normaly be from Liverpool via the Liverpool and Manchester Rly line to Earlestown where it would then join the WCML and pass through Warrington before heading towards Frodsham. This time however owing to work which was ongoing at Acton Grange the trip was to run from Liverpool via Runcorn and along the now multi directional Halton Curve to Frodsham before resuming the usual route. The run from L'pool South Parkway via Runcorn and the Halton Curve to Frodsham was completely new metals for me as id never been across the Runcorn railway bridge behind steam traction, let alone gone down the Halton Curve (even on a normal service train).
The full routing for the tour was from Liverpool to Frodsham via L'pool South Parkway, Runcorn and Frodsham to Chester. With the remainder of the journey being along the north wales coast line to Holyhead. The return trip would follow the outward route.
