Lake Maligne is the largest natural lake in Jasper National Park. It is 22 kilometers long and 1 kilometers wide. What about the depth you ask? well, it is 96 meters deep. The crystal waters of magical Maligne Lake is the result of the melting glaciers of Jasper National Park.

The best time to visit Lake Maligne is from Mid-June to late October. This is when the lake has thawed from winter. If you are planning to visit Jasper in 2021, you absolutely have to take the Maligne Cruise. You will have an amazing opportunity to discover the world famous Spirit Island by taking a glass-enclosed cruise boats with a knowledgeable guide who will tell you Maligne's history and explain its geology, weather, faune, flora and wildife. Spirit Island is arguably one of the most photographed places in the Canadian Rockies.

According to some accounts of First Nations mythology, Spirit Island gets its name from two young lovers from feuding tribes who used to meet secretly on the island. However, when the young woman eventually confessed her forbidden affair to her father, one of the tribes’ chiefs, he banned her from ever returning to the island. Heartbroken, her lover continued to return to Spirit Island throughout his life, hoping to see his beautiful lover again. But she never came and he eventually died on the island, where his spirit still resides.

The tickets were sold out pretty quick for specific times. If you are into photography, you may want to book the late afternoon slots as the sun moves west across the sky, it can seem to shine straight on the island like a spotlight. The distance to Lake Maligne is about 50 kilometers from Jasper and can take about an hour to reach. Give yourself plenty of time specially if you plan to stop along the way. Please plan your day accordingly as the Maligne Canyon is another popular destination which requires some hiking and may end up taking at least half a day. We highly recommend that you. If you want to enjoy what each of these destinations offers, we highly recommend that you do them on separate days. You absolutely should stop by the famous Medicine Lake as the view just simply spectacular and if the weather is nice, you go go for a swim.

There will be enough parking spots at the Maligne Cruise and it's a very short walk to board your boat. You will notice immediately how friendly the staff are. They will scan your ticket and you'll be on your way.
