Adopted in 1974, the Recommendation concerning education for international understanding, co-operation and peace and education relating to human rights and fundamental freedoms is a landmark legal instrument that highlights the role of education in promoting peace and human rights for the first time. In 2021, UNESCO’s Member States decided to revise and update this important tool given the evolving educational landscape and emerging threats to global peace and human survival.
Cecilia Barbieri, Chief of the Global Citizenship and Peace Education Section at UNESCO, discusses what has changed over the past 50 years that calls for a revival of the Recommendation.
