Rajarajeswaram, or the Thanjavur Big Bull Temple is an architectural and engineering marvel of medieval India. But, surprisingly there is more to it! Rajarajeswaram is replete with murals and paintings from three separate time periods. Of them, the 10th-century Chola murals are of immense value to the cultural heritage of this country. They are present in the circumabulatory path of the sanctum sanctorum of the Brihadeeshwara Temple, not open to public viewing.
The murals showcase the observation skills of the artiste - wherein he brings to life many scenes from day-to-day life during the reign of Rajaraja I, as well as stories of Shiva.
The second style of painting is visible in the ceiling of the Amman shrine. The description of each story is written below them in Tamil.
The third style of painting can be seen in the cloister mandapa and Nandi Mandapa - and they belong to the 17th century during the era of the Nayakas. Goes without saying how distinct each style of painting is!!
