STORYLINE
Latvia assumes an unusually high profile on the global stage this week as host of the NATO summit, and the Baltic nation is seizing the opportunity
to showcase its attractions to the world.
Riga city workers on Monday paved downtown streets, refurbished building facades and put on a fresh coat of paint along the routes where 26 presidents and prime ministers will be shuttled.
Police with sniffer dogs were readying themselves and people started putting up the Latvian flag on building facades.
Meanwhile, an exposition was taking place at the NATO summit venue, showcasing NATO military apparel, plane models and other hardware.
Never before has a NATO summit meant so much for a country as it will for Latvia, which has made a dramatic transformation from a decrepit Soviet republic to a thriving democracy with a fast-growing economy.
Discussion of Afghanistan, where NATO has 32-thousand troops battling the Taliban and working on reconstruction, is likely to dominate the alliance's summit.
Leaders of member countries are also expected to address more of the alliance's weaknesses at the summit, including serious transport deficiencies.
