Will Paul Bernardo ever be released from prison?
That's the question on everyone's mind as the Canadian serial killer is moved from maximum security to minimum security prison. The fear being that one day he can convince a parol board to let him free.
Paul Bernardo is a notorious Canadian serial killer who gained infamy for his heinous crimes during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Alongside his accomplice and then-wife, Karla Homolka, Bernardo committed a series of abductions, sexual assaults, and murders that shook the nation. Bernardo's calculated and sadistic behavior left a trail of terror in the Toronto area, culminating in his eventual capture and conviction. His crimes and the subsequent legal proceedings continue to captivate public attention, raising questions about the nature of evil, justice, and the enduring impact of his actions on the victims' families and Canadian society as a whole.
TVO's the Thread speaks to Chris Sewrattan, criminal lawyer and Toronto Metropolitan University professor, about the subject. Sewrattan discusses what being a dangerous offender means for individual's chance of getting released and the human side of criminal law. Because while it is technically and legally scope for anyone to be paroled, there is also the human side of law. And that human side says that there would be a public outcry if he was every released.
