In this video essay I explore Ingmar Bergman's psychological masterpiece Persona - a white whale of film criticism. After seeing the innovations of the 60s, with French New Wave filmmakers like Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut, as well Italians like Michelangelo Antonioni and Federico Fellini, Bergman borrowed their radical, self-conscious cinematic language for his own wholly idiosyncratic purposes.
