You're watching part 2 of investigating failure of a ZF4 HP18 transmission.
This is my old original gearbox from the 1995 Citroen XM 2.1 TD SD hatchback.
Please note - this isn't an in-depth 'how to' guide but more of a general interest into the innards of an automatic front wheel drive gearbox...and yes - they're every bit as complicated inside as you'd expect. The trick is to make notes, take photos, make more notes and then have a cup of tea before taking the plunge. Oh - and keep workplace surgically clean if you're rebuilding a 'box to be used again. Tiniest bit of dirt in the valve block will upset it.
The story so far...
At this stage in the strip down, I haven't seen any clues as to why the transmission failed except residue of ATF (automatic transmission fluid) with a silvery shimmer to it which is classic signs of metal particle contamination. Far too much to be normal wear and tear. Just a case of finding the components that have worn.
