An active volcano in the Philippines has erupted, sending large plumes of ash into the sky and sparking the forced evacuation of thousands in nearby villages.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said in a statement on Monday, “An explosive eruption occurred at the summit vent of Kanlaon Volcano at 3:03 pm (local time).”
Evacuations are underway for more than 80,000 people in a six-kilometre radius of the volcano according to the Office of Civil Defense.
