Bank Unions have called a two day strike on 16th and 17th December 2021. About 60,000 bank employees are on strike. Bank unions want the withdrawal of the Banking Law (Amendment) Bill 2021 for governments plan to privatise public sector banks.
Convener of United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) Goa Santosh Haldankar said, "We are opposing privatisation of banks. The bill is in the parliament. Bankers are agitated. We have done six demonstrations so far. Privatisation is a disadvantage for the public as this puts public money at stake. It becomes difficult when banks fail due to frauds."
Haldankar added, "Job security will be at stake as there will be no additional recruitment. Already , we are facing challenges due to shortage of staff and need to manage many counters. The public sector banks have so far made a profit of about a lakh crores. The argument that public sector banks are non-profitable is false."
