There are 2 types of copyrights:
Composition - Performing Arts (PA) Copyright.
It includes everything that makes your music unique - lyrics, chords, melody, etc.
Master - Sound Recording (SR) Copyright.
It is the recording of your music.
Your content is protected from the time it is created.
But the truth is, to take legal action against someone, you must formally register your composition and master recordings with the United States Copyrights Office.
You should register as soon as you can because
To win a lawsuit:
1.
You have to show that your creation existed first.
2.
Prove that whoever copied your work was aware of it.
How to register with the US Copyright Office:
1.
Complete the application forms. Forms available on www.copyright.gov
2.
Each registration includes - completed application forms, non-refundable filing fee, non-returnable deposit and a recording of your work (if applicable).
