Most people are probably at least vaguely familiar with their local school districts and school boards, but how many have heard of the State Superintendent of Public Instruction? This elected office oversees everything from statewide curriculum standards to local school facilities for more than 9,000 public schools. The office can also step in to run local schools if the local district is failing its students. It’s also in charge of distributing billions of dollars in funding to local districts based on student attendance.
