Rabbi Diana Fersko reflects on the mitzvah of hakarat hatov, which means noticing the good.
“The forces of our culture are colluding to make us ungrateful," Rabbi Fersko says. "We are ambitious, we want more, we are reinforced to desire material things. But we also need to make space to allow what we have not just to be enough, but to fill us with wonder and appreciation.”
Rabbi Diana Fersko is the associate rabbi at Stephen Wise Free Synagogue. A vibrant Reform congregation on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Stephen Wise has served as a catalyst for progressive Jewish thought, support for Israel, and committed social action in the local community and beyond for more than 100 years.
