According to reports, western Norway comprises almost 1200 fjords, which are long, narrow, deep inlets of the sea between high cliffs formed by submergence of a glaciated valley. Because of such geography, which is stunning to see, travelling across the nation’s coastline is a nightmare.
Business Insider recently reported that the drive from Kristiansand to Trondheim in Norway takes about 21 hours and one has to take as many as seven ferry crossings to continue on the journey.
It is this need that has seen the Norwegian Public Roads Administration proposing the world’s first underwater floating tunnel through the Norwegian Sea.
The tunnels would be submerged to about 30.5 meters from the surface and each would be the wide enough to accommodate two lanes, it is proposed to have two tunnels, one for traffic in each direction, and its leaders mentioned to drive through them would very similar experience to travel underwater tunnels where Norway has 35 of them. In theory, these tunnels will reduce the journey of 22 hours on the road in Sognefjord within 11 hours.
To carry out this project has a budget of 25000 million dollars and is estimated to have them ready for the year 2035, but not before making relevant analyzes showing the possible risks of having a structure of this type to streams, and to remember that it would be the first tunnel of this kind, however the money is designed to reduce trips between fjords, so if that is not practicable may be used for other proposals.
