New World vs Old World: What’s the Difference?
You may have come across these terms in your wine circle, but it is difficult to know what they mean if you are a budding wine enthusiast.
While differentiating between the two might seem like a challenge, it’s actually pretty simple.
At its core, the distinction boils down to GEOGRAPHY.
Old World Wines: Originating from regions where modern winemaking traditions were born. These are countries that don’t just adhere to the rules; they have made them. These regions not only pioneered winemaking practices but also exported their wines, grapes, expertise, and traditions globally. Some Old World wine regions are France, Spain, Portugal, Italy, etc.
New World Wines: Embodying the spirit of innovation, these wines seem to say, 'Learn the rules, then redefine them.' They hail from countries that adopted and adapted winemaking traditions from elsewhere, often during periods of colonization. After all, the challenges of colonization surely called for a refreshing glass at day's end. Some New World wine regions are Australia, Chile, California in the US, Argentina and South Africa.
