Meditation on Scripture: Is. 38:5 "God Sees Our Tears"

“I have heard your prayer and seen your tears” (Is. 38:5)

Meditation:
The Lord in His mercy said this to the sick king Hezekiah, despite the fact that his sorrow was of a purely earthly and even self-serving nature: Hezekiah’s tears were only caused by the fear of death and the desire to live. But, nevertheless, the Lord said to him: “I have…seen your tears”.

It would seem that a great chasm separates human infirmity and Divine greatness. When I cry and suffer under the burden of a burning, but purely earthly sorrow, can the Lord truly commiserate with my tears? Human wisdom gives me a negative answer, but the Lord in His boundless mercy proves to me that He sees and heeds my tears. And I know that His Word is true. Human assistance is always limited; people can neither comprehend nor understand the depth of suffering and requirements of their needy brethren, and even if they could, they would have neither the means nor the time to truly help them. But the Lord, Who sees my tears and knows the reason for them, descends to all my needs, and, through His great mercy, is ready to help and console.

The Lord’s consolation is all-powerful and marvelous. It does not always satisfy the desire of the heart, does not always remove the reason for the tears, but it gives immeasurably more – it lets the soul be at peace with everything it has been sent. It gives it the readiness to voluntarily deny itself of that which it has been deprived of, and, moreover, – in the valley of tears it opens up springs to it, and the soul goes from strength to strength (Ps. 84:6,7), – praising God even for suffering, and seeing His love in everything. St.Paul calls upon us to open all our desires and needs to God not in order to primarily receive what we desire from Him, but so that the “peace of God”, which is always sent in reply to the outpouring of our soul, fills our entire being. “The peace of God transcends all understanding,” as it is said. Incomprehensible and invincible, it comes directly from God not only for a moment, but in order to preserve both our sorrowful hearts and anxious minds in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:6,7).

«Я услышал молитву твою, – увидел слезы твои» (Ис. 38:5)

Господь в Своем милосердии изрек это слово больному царю Езекию, несмотря на то, что скорбь его была чисто земного и даже себялюбивого свойства: слезы Езекия были вызваны лишь страхом смерти и желанием жить. И все же Господь сказал ему: «Я... увидел слезы твои».

Казалось бы, что целая пропасть разделяет человеческую немощь от Божественного величия. Когда я плачу и страдаю под гнетом жгучей, но чисто земной скорби, неужели Господь может сострадательно внимать моим слезам? Людская премудрость отвечает мне на это отрицательно, но Господь в Своем неисчерпаемом милосердии мне доказывает, что Он видит и внемлет моим слезам. И я знаю, что Слово Его истинно. Помощь людская всегда бывает ограничена; люди не могут даже узнать и постигнуть всей глубины страданий и нужд своих немощных братьев, а если бы и могли понять их, не имели бы ни средств, ни времени принести им настоящую помощь. Но Господь, видящий слезы мои и знающий их причину, нисходит ко всем моим нуждам и, по великой милости Своей, готов помочь и утешить.

Утешения Господни всемогущи и дивны. Они не всегда удовлетворяют желание сердца, не всегда устраняют причину слез; но они дают несравненно больше этого – они мирят душу со всем, что ей послано. Они дают ей готовность отрешиться добровольно от того, чего она лишена, и, более того, – в долине плача они открывают ей источники, и душа идет от силы в силу (Пс. 83:7, 8), – прославляя Бога даже за страдания, видя во всем Его любовь. Апостол Павел призывает нас к тому, чтобы мы все желания наши и нужды открывали Богу не для того, чтобы непременно получить от Него просимое, а для того, чтобы «мир Божий», который всегда посылается в ответ на излияния души нашей, наполнял все наше существо. «Мир Божий – превыше всякого ума», сказано. Непостижимый, несокрушимый, он нисходит прямо от Бога не только на минуту, но чтобы соблюсти и скорбные сердца и тревожные помышления наши во Христе Иисусе (Флп. 4:6, 7).
