Porthtowan Beach is a popular Cornish beach on the North Coast of Cornwall between Illogan and St Agnes. It is known for its sand and its clean water. It is also very popular with surfers. At low tide, the beach joins on to Chapel Porth beach and at low-medium tide it joins on to Lushington Cove which can be seen in this video. The beach is at the end of a valley which was extensively used for mining. The valley included mines such as Wheal Ellen which produced 2,600 tons of Copper. All of these mines are now just ruins. Other mines around Porthtowan Beach include Great Wheal Charlotte and, a bit further up the coast, Wheal Coates which was used in the TV series 'Poldark'.
