The Ferrari Testarossa was released in 1984 as the successor to the Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer. While the BB was a hit with consiumers it had some issues that the Testarossa was able to overcome such as the cabin overheating. The Ferrari Testarossa was designed by Pininfarina and produced from 1984 to 1991 until it was replaced by the 512 TR and then the 512 M. In total there were almost 10,000 cars produced, (including the 512 TR and M) making it one of the most mass-produced Ferraris.
All versions of the Ferrari Testarossa came with rear-mounted 12 cylinder engine and five-speed manual transmission. The rear mid-engine design (engine between the axles but behind the cabin) kept the center of gravity in the middle of the car, which increased the stability and cornering capabilities of the car, making the driving experience much like that of a high powered go kart. The original Testarossa was reintroduced as the Ferrari 512 TR (TR standing for TestaRossa), at the Los Angeles Auto Show, as a completely new car. in 1994 the Ferrari F512 M was introduced at the 1994 Paris Auto Show. The car dropped the TR initials and added the M which in Italian stood for modificata and was the very last version of the Testarossa. The Testarossa was replaced in 1996 by the front-engined 550 Maranello.
