It was important for the Roman elite to be remembered after their death, and to show off their status, ancestry and wealth. Burial also symbolically transferred the dead to the world beyond and showed proper humility for the gods. The monumental tomb became the new home of the family’s deceased ones, which you could visit to communicate with the spirits of the dead.
