Here is some information about Plummer-Vinson Syndrome:
*What is Plummer-Vinson Syndrome?*
Plummer-Vinson Syndrome is a rare condition that can occur in people with long-term iron deficiency anemia. It is characterized by difficulty swallowing due to small, thin growths of tissue that partially block the upper food pipe (esophagus).
*Causes:*
The exact cause of Plummer-Vinson syndrome is unknown, but genetic factors and a lack of certain nutrients (nutritional deficiencies) may play a role. It is more common in women.
*Symptoms:*
Symptoms may include:
- Difficulty swallowing
- Weakness
*Treatment:*
Treatment is primarily aimed at correcting the iron-deficiency anemia. Patients with Plummer-Vinson syndrome should receive iron supplementation in their diet. This may improve dysphagia and pain. If not, the web can be dilated with esophageal bougies during upper endoscopy to allow normal swallowing and passage of food.
*Prognosis:*
People with this condition generally respond to treatment. However, patients with Plummer-Vinson syndrome seem to be at an increased risk for hypopharyngeal and esophageal squamous cell cancers.
