STORYLINE
Protesters conforming to the 'black bloc' clothing code were out in force in Curitiba on Monday as the city prepared to host its first World Cup match.
Black block protest protocol refers to tactics of concealment where demonstrators wear black unmarked clothing along with hoods and scarves to protect their identities from authorities to avoid prosecution.
A few hundred masked demonstrators marched from downtown Curitiba and made their way towards the Arena da Baixada football stadium but were deterred by road blocks put in place by local police.
The stadium was about to host the Iran vs Nigeria match which ended in a no-score draw.
The demonstrations are centred around overspending for the World Cup and the lack of basic infrastructure like health, housing and security in Brazil.
