The European Union stands united with the Baltic countries and understands the challenge faced by the Baltics living next to neighbors like Russia and Belarus, Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) told reporters today after a meeting with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola on Friday.
In Silina's opinion, it is important that the EP election campaign commences in Riga, because it will make Latvian residents understand that the Latvian people are also Europeans who have the right to decide the future of Europe. "Those who we elect to the parliament are the people who later decide on sanctions against Russia, on support for Ukraine, who also decide on the future of Latvia. Participating in free elections is a cornerstone of democracy," said Silina.
The Latvian prime minister and the EP president also discussed Europe's EUR 50 billion financial assistance to Ukraine, as well as the importance of continuing negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU. "We cannot delay these steps, we have to continue the work we have started," said Silina.
Metsola agreed with Silina and praised Latvia for its substantial support for Ukraine.
Elections are important because voters have the opportunity to elect politicians who represent their values, said Metsola, encouraging everyone to exercise their democratic rights.
Commenting on the last EP elections in 2019, Metsola confirmed that Latvia had the lowest voter turnout, while some EU member countries had record turnouts. European politicians had made the mistake of indulging in "slight cynicism" and not talking enough to their voters. Metsola's aim when taking office was to break the "Brussels bubble" - to talk to people who have lost faith in politics or feel that EU institutions are too far from their homes. That is why Metsola is in Latvia today and why she will be visiting all member countries, explained the EP president.
The two politicians said that they were confident that EU member countries were united and that in February all 27 countries would be able to agree on further assistance to Ukraine.
As reported, Metsola is visiting Latvia today as part of her tour of EU member states ahead of next year's EP elections. While in Latvia, Metsola is to meet with top state officials, representatives of NGOs and young people to discuss the importance of participation in elections and the need to strengthen democracy in current volatile geopolitical circumstances.
