We spent 3 days in the Coeur d'Alene area of Idaho. At the end of May, the Coeur d'Alene area was stunningly beautiful. On the day we left Coeur d'Alene, we left early in the morning to be able to squeeze in a 2-hour ride on the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes as we drove I90 on our way to Livingston MT. We picked the 12 miles between Cataldo and Kellogg because of accessibility from I90 (the Cataldo trailhead is just by the freeway exit) and because the trail was away from the freeway for most of the ride. It turned out to be a good choice and stunning as it follows the Coeur d'Alene River. The bonus was that the first half of the ride was uphill and the return was downhill, although being a rail to trail the grade is very modest. This rail-to-trail is an absolute gem, beautiful and well-maintained (and gentle). I would say to put it on your bicycling bucket list. We really want to go back and do a 4-day bikepacking ride of the trail.
