Gilberto Câmara, former director of Brazil's National Institute for Space Research on how Brazil managed to reduce deforestation in Amazonia by 80% with the help of open data and public campaigning.
Gilberto Câmara is a researcher on Geoinformatics and one of the leaders on the global effort for making Earth Observation data openly accessible. He was the director of Brazil’s National Institute for Space Research (INPE) from 2006 to 2012, where he lead a team of scientists to develop new ways of fighting deforestation in the Amazon rain forest. INPE’s team achieved big advances, supported by total information transparency. The leading scientific journal Nature called the reduction in deforestation in Amazonia to be “the biggest environmental success story in decades”.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
