Here is the first of several videos about music theory. It is geared towards drummers who have no previous experience in this area. I often receive emails from drummers who want to learn about song form in Jazz and other types of music and this is the first step. By learning how harmony works you can start to hear form and chords and will be able to become a more musical player. You become a true musician and not just a timekeeper. This video explains the basic notes and intervals which is the first step to understanding how our western system of music works.
Other videos will discuss chords, voicings, scales, improvisation and song form. You may need to pause the videos to read the graphics carefully. I will be using a vibraphone for all of these videos as this is my preferred instrument for teaching theory.
Take these lessons in small chunks and don't get overwhelmed.
