STORYLINE:
US soldiers serving in Afghanistan's capital Kabul gathered on Friday to celebrate the New Year, with many sending best wishes back to their families.
This year has been by far the deadliest for foreign troops since the the 2001 US-led invasion.
702 foreign troops were killed in Afghanistan in 2010, compared to 504 the previous year.
In an end-of-year review of the US strategy in the country, the Obama administration cited advances in its push against the Taliban in southern Afghanistan, but acknowledged that while Taliban momentum has been stopped or reversed in some areas, "gains remain fragile and reversible."
