Columbus City Council Meeting Highlights:
• HONORING DEPARTING DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT STEVEN R. SCHOENY: Council President Shannon Hardin is sponsoring resolution 0269X-2019 to commend and thank Steven R. Schoeny for his outstanding service to the City of Columbus. During Director Schoeny’s tenure, the Department of Development partnered with the private sector to create approximately 18,000 jobs in Columbus, 3,136 units of affordable housing, and sold a total of 1400 Land Bank properties, including 775 formerly blighted structures for renovation.
• CELEBRATING MESKEL WITH COLUMBUS’ ETHIOPIAN COMMUNITY: Council President Pro Tem Elizabeth Brown is sponsoring resolution 0265x-2019 to recognize the Ethiopian community celebration of Meskel being held in Columbus on September 27, 2019. Meskel is an annual holiday in the Ethiopian Orthodox church which has been celebrated in Ethiopia for more than 1700 years. The holiday has come to represent an important cultural and national celebration for Ethiopians throughout the world including for members of the Ethiopian community living in Columbus.
• PROTECTING OUR STREETS FROM TAKING A "BEETING" THIS WINTER: Councilmember Shayla Favor, Chair of the Public Service & Transportation committee is sponsoring ordinance 2301-2019 to initiate contracts for the purchase of deicing chemicals for snow and ice control. This ordinance includes a purchase for a product containing beet molasses, a natural additive that helps salt better stick to pavement and increases the capacity to melt ice. The total expenditure is $200,000 from the Municipal Motor Vehicle Tax Fund.
• RECOGNIZING SEPTEMBER AS NATIONAL ALCOHOL AND DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY MONTH: Councilmember Priscilla Tyson is sponsoring resolution 0272x-2019 to recognize September as National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month and to thank Mr. David Royer for his 40 years of leadership, service, and support for the people and families in Columbus and Central Ohio in their quest to restore their lives.
• COMBATTING NEIGHBORHOOD FLOODING: Councilmember Rob Dorans, chair of the Public Utilities committee is sponsoring ordinance 2263-2019 to authorize the Director of Public Utilities to modify an existing agreement with Stantec Consulting Services, Inc. to provide 200 sump pump installations in the Hilltop for a total expenditure of $319,310.63.
