(9 Mar 2017) US President Donald Trump's European ally Milos Zeman said on Thursday he wants to seek re-election in next year's Czech presidential election.
Zeman made a brief announcement on Thursday at a meeting with his friends and supporters at the Prague Castle, the presidency seat, marking the fourth anniversary of his inauguration.
Zeman was elected for his first five-year term to the largely ceremonial post in January 2013.
Known for his strong anti-migrant rhetoric, he divides the nation with his pro-Russia stance and support for closer ties with China.
But his popularity remains high and he is the one to beat in the election scheduled for early 2018.
Zeman was among few European leaders who endorsed Trump and was invited to visit him in the White House in April.
