Tonight we're looking at South Africa's coal predicament.
South Africa has an abundance of coal and has historically relied on coal to create the vast majority of our electricity. Coal production provides employment when the country can barely afford more job losses. But coal creates so-called dirty energy and it's increasing our emissions that contribute to climate change. Greenpeace has pointed out that the Witbank area in Mpumalanga has the world's dirtiest air because of its coal operations. One of the researchers urging SA to move away from coal and stop polluting the planet is Hilton Trollip who is the Senior Research Officer at the Energy Research Centre at UCT.
